This guide offers tips to improve the preview performance in Alight Motion, reducing the lag when previewing or scrolling through a project. It also facilitates the exporting process by using fewer resources.

  • iPhone or iPad

    Avoid ultra-high-resolution projects

Resolutions over 1080p, such as 4k, can significantly strain even the most powerful devices. We recommend not using higher resolutions than needed.

Use appropriate video resolution and frame rate

    • If you’re using a pre-recorded video with a high resolution, consider converting it to a lower resolution before using it in your project.
    • When recording a video, choose a resolution and frame rate matching the project you plan to use it for.

Videos recorded in high resolutions or at high frame rates take longer to process, which can impact performance and storage space.

    Make performance-based choices

We recommend using heavy features and effects wisely. Some features or effects in Alight Motion are heavier than others, which can be more demanding on your device and cause preview performance issues.

Generally, using a few of these in your project won’t cause problems, but applying these features/effects to many layers concurrently on the timeline can affect preview performance. As a matter of fact, increasing strength, size, or radius property will slow down performance.

In some cases, there are alternative features available that can give better preview performance while yielding similar results. For example, Stroke uses fewer resources than Border.

We suggest using the following features or effects with moderation for optimal performance:

    • Shadow (especially with large values for Size)
    • Glow & Inner Glow
    • Contour Gradient & Contour Lines
    • Smooth Bevel
    • Glass
    • Matte Choker
    • Blur (Directional, Radial, Lens, Mask, Motion)
    • Long Shadow
    • Radial Shadow

Turn off layers in the timeline

Next to every layer, there is a visibility icon Untitled.png that can be used to turn the visibility of a layer off or on. When turned off, the layer isn’t rendered on the screen, and this can reduce the strain on your device.

We suggest changing the visibility of your layers when performance issues arise. Turning off specific layers can speed up your work, but remember to turn them back on before exporting to make sure they’re shown in the exported video.

    Enable low-quality preview

Enabling this feature reduces the resolution of the preview without affecting the exported video. However, in some cases, turning this setting off may also improve performance. Therefore, we recommend changing this setting from the side menu.

Note: This feature is unavailable on iOS because these devices automatically manage preview resolution.

    Manage your audio settings

The Audio Resampling setting can be found in the side menu, and it controls the quality of the audio in the project. If you have issues with audio, we suggest setting the resampling to Low while editing a project.

Don’t forget to set it back to High or Ultra before exporting the project. This way, you’ll experience the best performance while editing, and the best quality in your exported video.
